The INTEGRAL Project

The INTEGRAL project is the next ESA M2 mission which is dedicated to the fine spectroscopy and imaging of celestial gamma-ray sources. It is an observatory mission with only 25% of the time being PI time.

The INTEGRAL payload consists of 4 main instruments :

  • SPI - A Germanium gamma ray spectrometer
  • IBIS - A high angular resolution imager
  • JEM-X - The X-ray monitor
  • OMC - An optical monitoring Camera
A further 'instrument' is the INTEGRAL Science Data Center which will assist observers in the reduction and interpretation of their data.

Southampton INTEGRAL People

The Southampton team is currently involved in both the IBIS instrument, Science Data Centre and and the INTEGRAL Mass Model Project. The INTEGRAL team at Southampton currently consists of 5 members of staff and 4 research students, although we hope to increase that number in the near future. The members of staff are : and the research students are :

The Southampton IBIS Involvement

The Southampton group originally developed much of the concept for the imager on INTEGRAL, and still are involved in what has now become the IBIS instrument. Tony Bird is a Co-I on the IBIS team with involvement in the following areas:
  • Calibration planning
  • Calibration software
  • Scientific design of the in-flight calibrator
  • Veto system design
For more information see the Southampton IBIS Homepage, or the specific pages related to the calibration of IBIS.

The INTEGRAL Science Data Center

Southampton is also involved in the ISDC, with a Co-I position with responsibility to co-ordinate the simulation activities within the ISDC and the rest of the science ground segment.

The INTEGRAL Mass Model

The INTEGRAL Mass Model project is primarily aimed at providing an independent and uniform assessment of the INTEGRAL payload for ESA. The project is being run by Southampton. Click here for more information on the Mass Model project.
